Ripanj is a small, ordinary town in Serbia, but as you walk its streets, you’ll encounter something that will make you stop: a huge, multi-story building with a dome on top. What is it? A church? A castle? Seeing such a bizarre building will definitely make you curious to hear its story.
Built at the beginning of the 20th century, it used to be an ordinary three-story house. Until the 1990s, when it underwent an incredible transformation by its owner, Andrej Kačarević, who worked in design (perhaps his occupation inspired such a wild, creative idea). The house was once grey, but a few years ago, it was painted white with “Konak Kačarevića” written on it. It also got new plastic windows.
Seeing the house now, you’d hardly believe it used to be just an old three-story house. Such a transformation might be called crazy or even controversial, but it’s a local tourist attraction—no other building in this town will grab your attention so strongly.
