Furnished and decorated waiting areas for public transport aren’t a new concept, but Dobřany, a village in the Czech Republic, has one that stands out above the rest. With furniture, books, decorations, and even a piano, this bus stop is unlike any other. But what’s the story behind it?
It all started a few years ago when a nearby school underwent renovations. During the process, an old piano was damaged by water. It didn’t look as nice as before, but it still worked. Instead of throwing it away, the school director had a unique idea—placing it in the bus stop. However, he wasn’t the only one behind the transformation. A teacher had already envisioned improving the space, and together with her students, she began a complete makeover.
They cleaned the building, painted the walls, and furnished it, turning a dull shelter into a cozy, welcoming space. The renovation was also inspired by the Komenský 2020 project, which aimed to improve public spaces. In fact, the bus stop makeover won a competition within the project—a well-deserved victory, given the stunning results.
What was once an ordinary structure became a charming, fully furnished waiting area. A table, chairs, a sofa, an armchair, and bookshelves overflowing with books—nothing is missing. The old furniture adds a special charm, making it hard to leave when the bus finally arrives.
